The student identifies design principles and techniques in floral art and interiorscapes. The student is expected to:

(A) identify the aesthetic benefits and the history of floral art, particularly as it relates to current practice;

(B) classify and identify flowers and plants used in floral design; and

(C) identify design elements and principles.

Geometry in Floral Design

Goal: To discover and analyze the geometric forms in floral designs.

Description: All floral arrangements are based on a particular shape. This production discusses how to make a symmetrical equilateral triangular arrangement, a circular mound arrangement and a crescent arrangement. Along with how to create these arrangements, the main characteristics of many more arrangements are explained.

Objectives:

1. To analyze the geometric shapes in floral design.

2. To prepare geometric designs with fresh and silk floral materials.

3. To evaluate geometric designs with fresh and silk floral materials.

Techniques of Floral Design.

Goal: To gain an understanding of the different techniques and types of flowers used in basic floral designs. To understand the stem treatments, tools and preservatives used in post harvest care of cut flowers. Students will understand the overall importance of caring for cut flowers after harvest.

Description: Demonstrating the proper techniques used in floral design is very important when creating an arrangement. This presentation takes a closer look at the proper floral design techniques. How are flowers processed and cared for before they get to the customer? Go behind the scenes at a wholesale floral company and a retail flower shop for an in-depth look at the care of flowers after they have been harvested. This presentation examines the process from the time the flowers are processed at the wholesale florist until they are placed in the cooler at the retail florist. The use of preservatives and disease prevention are also discussed.

Objectives: 1. To identify the types of flowers and foliage. 2. To demonstrate the various wiring methods in floral design. 3. To analyze the use of various flowers and foliage in floral arrangements. 1. To discuss the importance of post harvest care of cut flowers. 2. To demonstrate the proper steps of stem treatment used in post harvest care of cut flowers. 3. To analyze the various floral preservatives. 4. To identify the various tools and equipment used in the post harvest care of cut flowers.

Lesson Plan 8/17-8/26 (Two Weeks)

Goal: To gain an understanding of the history and origins of floral design.

Description: This presentation describes the evolution of floral design and how each culture influenced today’s designs. History of Floral Design addresses the various cultural styles and provides examples of each. The presentation is segmented into primary categories which include: Oriental Influence, Classical Influence, European Influence and American Influence. Students will learn the different elements of floral design and the significance of certain elements to particular cultures. The students will be able to apply the floral design descriptions for each culture to designs seen today, determine the influences used to create the design and determine how florists encompass several different elements to create a floral arrangement.

Objectives: 1. To identify the origins of floral design. 2. To analyze the history of floral design. 3. To discover the developments of floral design. 4. To evaluate the significance of floral design.

Class 1: Discuss with the class the importance of floral design. Show the History of Floral Design – Significance of Floral Design segment.

Class 2: Show the History of Floral Design – Oriental Influence on Floral Design segments.

Class 3: Show the History of Floral Design – Classical Influence on Floral Design segment.

Class 4: Show the History of Floral Design – European Influence on Floral Design segment.

Class 5: Show the History of Floral Design – American Influence on Floral Design and History of Floral Design – Floral Design Industry segments.Complete the History of Floral Design Word Search. Students assigned groups to complete 3D Floral Project in and pick time period to complete project over.

Class 6-8: Students will work in their groups to complete a 3D floral design from a certain time period covered during class the previous week. The project will demonstrate the techniques and design practices used during that time.
